This new coastal independent living community was in need of some gorgeous gardens to complement 65 newly built apartments.

The team at Adlington Retirement Living got in touch with us around the time the apartment complex was being constructed, and we were able to step in to support them. Over the next few weeks, our team of experienced horticulturists assessed the community’s outdoor areas and created a suitable design for the new gardens.

As with all the gardens we design for independent living communities, we wanted to strike a balance between an overall sense of style that left room for individual character. These outdoor areas were, after all, going to be the back gardens of the homeowners; they needed to be adaptable so as to suit the taste of a variety of people.

Because we were designing the garden from scratch, we were unable to liaise with existing homeowners to find out what features they’d like. We did, however, theorise there would likely be a few keen gardeners moving into The Sidings! Hence, we designed and built six raised wooden planters to allow homeowners to easily grow flowers or produce. We particularly wanted raised planters so homeowners could enjoy tending the garden without having to bend or kneel down.

To show off the planters and demonstrate how homeowners might take advantage of them, we seeded a range of fruit and veggie-bearing flora. It’s our hope that visitors to The Sidings could appreciate how they might make use of the planters if they were to move in – and if so, the JK Horticulture team could be on hand to help them realise their plans.

Since designing and planting the garden, our team have begun making regular visits to The Sidings to maintain the gardens. As spring rolls into summer, we’ll be there to support the Adlington team and The Siding’s homeowners to keep their gardens in wonderful condition.
